Swimmer from Rhode Island drowns in Ammonoosuc River

CRAWFORD'S PURCHASE - A 37-year-old Rhode Island man drowned in the Upper Falls portion of the Ammonoosuc River on Friday afternoon, according to state police.

Police said the man, identified as William P. Glad of Cumberland, R.I., jumped 10 feet into a pool of swift, turbulent water adjacent to the falls. When he surfaced, he yelled for help.

A relative of Glad jumped in to try to help, but rough waters pushed the man out of the pool into "quieter" waters, police said in a news release. Glad resurfaced about 15 to 20 yards away, but was not responsive.

Glad was retrieved from the water and taken to Littleton Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

State Police said the incident is a reminder that swimmers need to be cautious if a body of water appears swift, rough or otherwise unsafe, and to follow any posted safety information.
