Marilinda Garcia: A great voice for the GOP

State Rep. Marilinda Garcia, R-Salem, smiles after announcing her candidacy for the 2nd Congressional District on Wednesday in Concord. (DAVID LANE/UNION LEADER)

In the GOP primary for Congress in the 2nd District, Republicans have a great candidate in state Rep. Marilinda Garcia of Salem. She would be both a superb challenger to Rep. Annie Kuster and an excellent representative in Congress.

Garcia has received a lot of national attention for being a Hispanic woman running in a Republican congressional primary. She provides just the sort of image Republicans need to present to voters, national pundits say.

Republicans in the 2nd District should go out and talk with Garcia. They would discover quickly that her real strength as a candidate has nothing to do with her surname or her appearance.

Garcia is the kind of candidate Republicans should be nominating because she is a sharp, thoughtful conservative who can articulate her positions with a depth of understanding and a breadth of appeal that few candidates possess.

In the House, she has already shown that she is willing to take principled stands on important issues (expanded gambling, education reform, state spending, to name a few) even if doing so might carry a political cost. Isn't that exactly the kind of leader people always say they want in Congress?

We have found Garcia to be a rare candidate who does not talk in soundbites, but rather prefers to explain her positions.

She has firm convictions, but does not belittle people who disagree with her. She would rather persuade and win than attack and lose.

Republicans in the 2nd District would do well to make her their nominee for Congress.
