Thousands turn out for latest rally supporting ousted Market Basket CEO

Thousands of Market Basket associates and store customers turned out Tuesday for a rally in support of ousted CEO Arthur T. Demoulas in Tewksbury, Mass. (DAVID LANE/UNION LEADER)

TEWKSBURY, Mass. — A crowd currently estimated at 12,000 Market Basket workers and customers rallied again Tuesday to bring back ousted CEO Arthur T. Demoulas, some defying the demand of company leaders to return to work this week.

Speakers at the rally praised the workers for standing up against what they perceive as injustice.

Lowell, Mass., Mayor Rodney C. Elliott, a Market Basket customer, told the crowd the Market Basket workers are “heroes of working-class people.

Joe Schmidt, a Market Basket employee, said employees showed the world “We can change darkness into light.”

“We shall never back down, Schmidt said.

Amid chants of “ATD,” one store employee told the crowd, “There is no union stronger than you guys right here.”

Said another speaker, “Never underestimate the power of 2 million customers.”

Most Market Basket customers are boycotting stores until the supermarket chain’s ousted CEO, Arthur T. Demoulas, is returned to power.

Some workers are picketing stores during their off hours while some have stayed off the job.

The company is holding a three-day job fair this week to replace workers who don’t return to their jobs.

Arthur T. Demoulas and his side of the family have offered to buy out the 50.5 percent that another family faction controls.
