PLAISTOW — The town will be looking at a new way to get money for police cruisers the department no longer uses.
Selectmen recently approved declaring one of the department’s old Ford Crown Victoria police cruisers as surplus and selling it to Adamson police supplies out of Haverhill, Mass.
The town and the police department have taken several approaches to selling cruisers that are no longer being used over the years, including putting them out to bid to private owners, according to Town Manager Sean Fitzgerald.
“In general, the range would be $2,000 to $3,000,” said Fitzgerald. “We were not really getting a lot of money for our used cruisers.”
Although it might seem like a car with only about 80,000 miles on it should bring in more money, Fitzgerald noted that the cruisers generally are running longer than normal cars and also take on much more wear and tear.
After discussing the issue with interim Police Chief Kathleen Jones, Fitzgerald said both agreed the town would be better off surplusing its current unused Crown Victoria to Adamson’s.
