City won’t host 2015 tourney

MANCHESTER — The Manchester Babe Ruth League has no interest in hosting a regional baseball tournament next summer.

“We had some interest in doing it for a third straight year, but decided not to,” said Manchester league president Gary Ulbin. Manchester hosted the 13-year-old Babe Ruth Regional Tournament at Gill Stadium last summer and is currently hosting the 13-15-year-old regionals this week in Manchester.

“It’s a lot of work and we’ve been fortunate to have many volunteers help us,” said Ulbin. “We just felt we needed a break from this. It also gives other towns and cities across New England a chance to host a regional.”

Bill Amanti, serving as co-director of the regional tournament this week, said Manchester is among the top communities in New England for Babe Ruth baseball.

“Manchester has a great reputation of hosting Babe Ruth tournaments over the years,” said Amanti. “Gill Stadium is a wonderful place to host a tournament, as many people in New Hampshire already know.”

Amanti confirmed that Portsmouth has an interest in hosting a regional tournament as soon as next summer.

“I was approached by George Manley (Babe Ruth District Commissioner for Portsmouth) and we talked about it,” said Amanti. “I advised him that Portsmouth should host a state tournament first. Hosting a state tournament sets the ground for hosting a regional tournament.”

In a losers bracket game Monday at Gill Stadium, Kyle Caraher hurled a five hitter and fanned four to lead Plymouth, Mass., past Central Maine, 6-4.

Plymouth took a 2-0 first inning lead behind a two-run single from Nick Lloyd. The Bay State pushed its lead to 6-1 in the fourth inning as Nolan Perry and Dillon Ketterer each contributed a clutch two-run single in the frame. Caraher, who only walked one batter, ran into some trouble in the fifth inning when Central Maine rallied for three runs.

Kolby Lawrence accounted for two of them with a single and he scored on a basehit from Kyle LaFreniere.

Ketterer had two hits in the win for Plymouth, which will face the winner of Monday night’s late game between Manchester and Pittsfield, Mass., who were both facing elimination.

Today at 8 p.m. the winners bracket final features Waterford, Maine, and Bennington, Vt., which upset Manchester Sunday night with a 6-3 victory. Austin Condo, on 140 pitches, pitched a complete game for the Vermont state champs against Manchester, which entered the game undefeated with a 5-0 record.

The regional tournament in Manchester will continue until Thursday.
