Londonderry gears up for Old Home Day
LONDONDERRY — From baby contests to beer tents, this summer’s Londonderry Old Home Day will truly have something for everyone.
This year’s festivities will take place Aug. 13-17. More than 10,000 people are estimated to pass through town that week for the 115th annual Old Home Day celebration.
Events kick off that Wednesday evening with a barbecue and concert for the town’s senior citizens, continuing through Sunday evening’s Christian music concert.
The majority of the activities for the five-day festival are centered on or around the Londonderry Town Common and include live music, a singing competition, fireworks, children’s activities, a softball game between police officers and firefighters, historical reenactments, a parade and a 5K road race.
New to the event roster this year will be a beer tent in front of Lions Hall, according to Kathy Wagner, chair of the Old Home Day Committee.
Wagner said the details are still being finalized, but noted that staff from Londonderry’s own 603 Brewery providing frosty libations for Saturday’s guests of legal drinking age.
Other newer additions to Old Home Day include the Londonderry Town Fair at Grange Hall on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m., and Family Bingo on Saturday, with time and location to be determined.
For the past several years, residents have been invited to share their talents inside the grange for the Town Fair portion of Old Home Day, with a bake-off being planned allowing them to vie for the title of best pie (and other goodies.
Local mother Maggie Siekmann said this year will be her first time organizing the Saturday morning baby contest.
The contest, open to all local youngsters under one-years-old, will take place in the Matthew Thornton Elementary School gymnasium at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16.
Deadline for registration is Aug. 8, with registration forms available on the Londonderry Old Home Day website.
Prizes will be given for Best Smile, Best Dressed and Best Personality, with the Little Miss and Little Master Londonderry title holders to be given a place of honor in the Old Home Day Parade later that day.
