Outdoor movies a possibility for Bedford

BEDFORD — The Bedford Village Common Development Committee discussed the possibility of getting a projection screen for summer movie nights for children on the Common.

Town Councilor Mac McMahan, who serves as council liaison to the committee, suggested getting the screen to the committee last week.

“I love that idea,” Chairwoman Beverly Thomas said in response to McMahan’s suggestion. “I have heard (of) other parks doing that.”

“Some of the concerts we have are really nice, but have a tendency to appeal to a segment of our community,” McMahan said. “If we had kids movies, we might be able to get the entire family out. The problem, obviously, would be sunrise-sunset. The young ones, they might not want them out at 9 o’clock at night.”

Vice Chairwoman Jeanene Procopis said she did not think that would be an issue, because the park is well-lit at night.

“We designed the park to be electrified,” she said. “The pathways have lighting on them, the bandstand has lighting on (it)…The timing isn’t a problem as far as people moving around the park at that time. The timing is certainly important for families trying to get their kids to bed at a reasonable time.”

Procopis said that local outdoor concerts have started at 7 p.m. and had good turnouts from families.

Thomas suggested that in planning a first run of the outdoor movies next summer, if the committee were to proceed with the project, would be to gear them toward teenagers who could stay out later.
