Hannaford Bros. Co. – the supermarket chain that at one point had a grip on key parts of the New Hampshire food market – has emerged as a serious bidder for the Market Basket chain, the Boston Globe has reported.
The Globe quoted "people briefed on the negotiations" as saying Hannaford has offered to purchase part or all of Market Basket, which has about 70 stores in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.
The deposed chief executive of Market Basket, Arthur T. Demoulas, is also trying to acquire a controlling share of the family-held company.
