Portsmouth native, 47, conquers 21-mile swim of the English Channel
A 47-year-old local man who didn't know how to swim growing up on the Seacoast, recently swam across the English Channel in less than 11 hours. Bob Fernald, a Portsmouth High School graduate and North Hampton resident, said once he "figured out swimming" about six years ago at the Portsmouth Indoor Pool, "I wanted to see how far it would go."
