DERRY — A Londonderry man accused of attempting to poison his aunt and uncle will undergo a mental competency exam before his case moves any further in court.

A judge ordered Wayne Hasnohorse, 50, to be examined on Thursday after a hearing in 10th Circuit Court, Derry Division. The exam was requested by Hasnohorse’s public defender.

Hasnohorse was arrested by police in Manchester July 30, on two counts of attempted first-degree assault.

He allegedly put a chemical in a water bottle for his aunt and uncle to drink, according to Londonderry police prosecutor Kevin Coyle. The aunt and uncle told police that Hasnohorse made comments earlier about killing them by poisoning them, police said.

The couple noticed that a bottle of their drinking water in the refrigerator the next morning had a strong chemical odor coming from it, according to police.

A field test by the Londonderry Fire Department revealed that an unknown chemical was present in the water, police said. Judge Margaret Moran refused to change Hasnohorse’s bail from $10,000 cash following Thursday’s hearing. His lawyer asked for bail to be lowered so Hasnohorse could be freed from Rockingham County jail while his case is pending.

Coyle told the judge that Hasnohorse was wanted in Rhode Island for failing to appear in court on a burglary charge. He faces a fugitive from justice charge and also has charges pending in Salem, according to Coyle. Police also learned that Hasnohorse was attempting to buy a bus ticket to leave the state prior to his arrest.

Coyle said a competency evaluation had already been ordered in the Salem case. The probable cause hearing for his Londonderry charges was continued until later in the month, Coyle said.

The assault charges are Class A felonies, each punishable by up to 7 ½ to 15 years in state prison.
