Somerville, Mass., has chosen from within for its next police chief. Somerville’s choice is Manchester’s gain in that local Chief of Police David Mara will not be heading south, at least for the moment.
Chief Mara was a finalist for the job. He is disappointed, he says; but he also says he has a great job in the Queen City. Mayor Ted Gatsas echoes that and said last week that he was happy that Mara remains here to pursue policing initiatives he has begun.
Well, yes and no. Yes, we think Chief Mara has done a fine job and will continue to do so. But unless the mayor and aldermen can come to an understanding with Mara that he intends to stay for a specified time, there is nothing keeping him here.
Change isn’t always a bad thing. Mara may do well with a new challenge and Manchester, now given fair warning that he is looking, should be thinking of and planning for a post-Mara era.
