Reason for change: NH budget is in a shambles

If anyone doubts the need for a change in New Hampshire’s governor, Charles Arlinghaus’ column on this page yesterday should be compelling reading.

Arlinghaus studies state government, incessantly. He is well-respected for his research and, as he wrote yesterday, New Hampshire’s budget is in shambles and Gov. Maggie Hassan is trying to keep the public from finding that out.

State Senate President Chuck Morse, who knows as much about budgets as Arlinghaus, is one of those in the dark as to the current state of affairs. He and others put together a budget whose revenue projections have been remarkably accurate (to within one-tenth of one percent for this year).

But spending has greatly exceeded those revenues. By how much? Gov. Hassan’s office declines to say. Educated guesses put the figure in the multi-millions of dollars.

New Hampshire not only needs to know that number. It is going to need a true chief executive to step in with the business sense to solve this and the state’s other fiscal issues. Hence, our endorsement above of Walt Havenstein in the Sept. 9 Republican primary.
