Durham man dies after car door-bike collision

DURHAM — A local man died Sunday of injuries he suffered when his bicycle hit a car door, police said.

John Kavanagh, 58, was biking east on Main Street shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday when Zachary A. Field, 24, of Durham, “opened the driver side door of his legally parked” car, police said in a release. Kavanagh, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bicycle, police said.

He was taken to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, where he died Sunday evening, police said.
