WINDHAM — Following an extensive search for new principal, Windham school officials found a solution that’s close to home.

On Wednesday, Superintendent Winfried Feneberg said Golden Brook Elementary School assistant principal Rory O’Connor had been promoted to principal, effective immediately.

After Golden Brook Elementary School Principal Christi Michaud turned in her resignation papers last month, Windham administrators had worked swiftly to try to fill the position, before school starts in a couple weeks.

Hired as assistant principal in 2009, she had been serving as the school’s principal since August 2012. Michaud was hired as the new principal for Hallsville Elementary School in Manchester in late July.

Feneberg said more than 20 candidates expressed interest in filling Michaud’s former position, but O’Connor was the most qualified.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled,” the superintendent said this week. “It soon became clear that Rory rose to the top.”

The School Board voted unanimously in support of O’Connor’s promotion Tuesday night.

District officials said the hiring process proved an extensive one and included interviews with educators, parents, board members, support staff and administrators. O’Connor has been working in the Windham School District since 2008. He holds two degrees from University of New Hampshire as well as a doctorate in Leadership and Learning from Rivier University.

With O’Connor’s promotion now creating an assistant principal vacancy, district officials said they’ll soon be accepting applications. An interim plan is in the works to temporarily fill the void when classes begin Aug. 27.
