Hill district considering three offers where to send middle, high school students

HILL — The town’s school district has so far received notice from three school districts that would like to teach the town’s 60 or so students in years to come.

The Newfound Area School District, the Merrimack Valley School District, and the Franklin School District — where Hill students currently attend school — have all contacted local school officials, each notifying them of its interest in taking on the school’s students, school officials said.

Last year, Hill had 18 students at Franklin Middle School and 43 students at Franklin High School.

“And Franklin would very much like to continue as the place for Hill students,” said Franklin and Hill School District Superintendent Robert McKenney.

“We think we have a lot to offer, and we’d like to continue to teach Hill students based on a formula,” he said.

Merrimack Valley would also be a good fit for Hill students, who would have to travel about 20 miles to get to Merrimack Valley schools, said Superintendent Mark MacLean.

“I think we have a lot to offer, particularly when you get to per-pupil cost,” MacLean said. “I think we offer a lot of opportunity to the students of Hill.”

Newfound school officials confirmed their district has answered the call from Hill school district officials for notices of interest in the town’s students.

Residents and school officials in Hill, which has been sending its students to Franklin through a tuition agreement for a number of years, with the most recent agreement signed in 2004, decided to investigate the feasibility of potentially joining another school district.

They felt it was a good time to look into leaving Franklin, as the town is about to reach its 10-year mark on the most recent agreement.

Hill school officials said they have accepted the notices of interest from the other districts and will discuss them at upcoming meetings.
