NH Fisher Cats slam way to win over Trenton

August 20. 2014 11:29PM

Make it four straight wins for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

Andy Burns, Brad Glenn and Jon Berti all homered and starter P.J. Walters hurled seven scoreless innings to lead the Fisher Cats past host Trenton 8-2 in an Eastern League contest Wednesday at Arm & Hammer Park before 5,647 fans.

Berti had a big night with two triples and a grand slam.

New Hampshire (63-66) looks to sweep the Thunder (60-70) today at 7 p.m. before returning to Manchester to host its final homestand of the season. The Fisher Cats will host Portland in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday and will close out the homestand with a four-game set against Harrisburg beginning Monday.

Walters (2-1), on 105 pitches including 72 for strikes, allowed six hits, no walks and fanned six. It was a scoreless game until the sixth inning when New Hampshire scored four runs and added four more in the seventh inning.

The Fisher Cats scored four runs in the sixth inning after two outs. Berti tripled and walked home when Burns blasted his 13th homer to left-center field. Melky Mesa kept the inning alive with a single and jogged home on Glenn’s sixth homer to left.

New Hampshire, which beat Trenton Tuesday, 2-1, behind only two hits from its offense, had four hits in the seventh inning alone Wednesday to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

The big blow was provided by Berti who drilled his grand slam to left with Mike McDade (single), Michael Crouse (single) and Jorge Flores (single) aboard. It was Berti’s seventh homer of the year and he also had three of New Hampshire’s 10 hits.

Blake McFarland pitched the scoreless eighth frame for New Hampshire. Reliever Scott Gracey was touched up for three hits and two runs in the ninth inning.
