Sea Dogs edge New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 4-3 Friday night

The opener of the final series between the New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the Portland Sea Dogs went to the visitors — but just barely.

Matt Newman’s one-out double in the ninth inning proved to be wasted as Portland closer Noe Ramirez nailed down a 4-3 victory Friday night before 7,012 fans at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

Ramirez began the ninth. After striking out Derrick Chung, he allowed Newman’s double to center field. But Ramirez induced groundouts from Jorge Flores and Jon Berti to earn his 15th save of the season.

Keith Couch, who worked seven innings and allowed all three runs, picked up his eighth victory in nine decisions.

The teams play again tonight (7:05 p.m.) and Sunday afternoon (1:35 p.m.).

The Sea Dogs’s two-run sixth was the difference in the game. Mike Miller and Sean Coyle singled, and Keury De La Cruz singled home Miller. Coyle scored on a double play ball, making it 4-2. Flores brough the Fishers closer with an RBI double in the seventh.

New Hampshire starter Casey Lawrence (9-8) took the loss.
