Newmarket man charged with sex assault of 12-year-old girl

BRENTWOOD — A Newmarket man was arrested on charges that he had sexual relations with a 12-year-old girl beginning April 2013, police said.

Jacob Knipstein, 18, is facing a single count of aggravated felonious sexual assault and three counts of felonious sexual assault following a monthslong investigation by Newmarket police.

Knipstein is due back in 10th Circuit Court, Brentwood Division, on Friday for a probable cause hearing.

Police said a school resource officer received information Feb. 4 about a possible sexual assault involving a girl from Newmarket.

The girl was interviewed at the Child Advocacy Center on Feb. 14, and identified Knipstein as someone she struck up a friendship with in sixth grade when she was around age 10 or 11, according to a sworn affidavit by Newmarket police Lt. Kyle True.

“The friendship changed to sexual in nature when she was in eighth grade, specifically April of 2013,” True said in the affidavit. At the time, the girl was 12 and Knipstein was 17 years old, according to police.

The girl told police that the sexual encounters happened at Knipstein’s apartment on Bennett Way in Newmarket.

Police say because of the age of the girl, Knipstein was charged with aggravated felonious sexual assault. She described having three sexual encounters with Knipstein at his apartment, the affidavit says.

Knipstein was interviewed by police March 3 in a Newmarket High School conference room. Knipstein admitted to having sex with the girl “three or four times total” in his bedroom between April and August 2013, according to the affidavit.

“Knipstein admitted during the interview that he was aware of (the girl’s) age,” True said in the affidavit. “Knipstein knew (her) to be 12 or 13 years old” during the sexual encounters.

The three sexual assault charges are felonies, and carry potential state prison terms. Knipstein remains free on $50,000 bail.
