Central High parents reminded to use caution when dropping kids off

MANCHESTER — With school starting next Wednesday, police are asking parents of Manchester High School Central students to pay attention to where they drop off their children.

“Stopping in a travel lane of Beech Street or Maple Street is illegal and places your child, yourself, as well as other motorists in danger,” police said Wednesday afternoon in a Nixle alert.

“It only takes one driver who is not paying complete attention and who does not notice that you are stopped to cause a serious collision, which could lead to your child sustaining serious injuries.”

Police ask that parents:

• Pull to the side of the road in a safe and legal location. There is a drop-off zone on the western side of Beech Street between Lowell Street and Concord Street.

“If using this drop-off zone, please do not remain stopped there for an extended period of time, since other parents need to utilize the location as well,” the alert states.

“The right side of the road is the preferred side so your child can exit on the curb side and not into the roadway side.”

• Check mirrors for oncoming traffic before allowing a child to exit a vehicle. • Encourage students to use crosswalks.

“Entering the roadway from between parked cars is a hazard since the parked cars can obstruct the sight line of approaching cars as well as impair your child’s ability to see approaching cars,” the alert says.
