Police say impairment and speed not factors in fatal crash in Conway
CONWAY — Although the investigation continues, police said neither impaired operation nor speed appear to be factors in a head-on collision Monday that killed a Berlin man and sent a local woman to a hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Kyle Guerin, 22, a 2010 graduate of Berlin High School, was operating a Chevrolet S10 pickup truck southbound on West Side Road about 7:30 a.m. when he crossed into the northbound lane in front of the Eastern Slope Farm and struck a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe operated by Michelle Sullivan, 46, of Conway.
Guerin was treated at the scene by Conway Rescue and Ambulance but succumbed to his injuries. Sullivan was taken to Memorial Hospital in Conway and then flown to Maine Medical Center.
Police Lt. Chris Mattei on Tuesday said he was told by a member of Sullivan’s family that she suffered extensive damage to a leg and would require several days of hospitalization, “but she’s going to make it.”
According to witnesses, Mattei said Guerin was seemingly on his way to work at The Country Picker movers in Conway Village. As he was going around a sharp corner on West Side Road, he crossed into Sullivan’s lane, giving her no time to take corrective action.“We don’t believe there was any impairment involved,” said Mattei, adding that “there were no skid marks on scene, no evidence in the road.”
The area where the collision occurred is posted at 35 mph and is not the scene of many accidents, said Mattei.
“Our investigation is pretty much on hold until we hear from the medical examiner,” who, said Mattei, may be able to determine whether Guerin experienced a medical emergency.
“It could be a medical condition, distracted driving, or he could have fallen asleep,” Mattei said. “But at this point, we do not believe there was any type of impairment of the driver or that speed was a factor.”
Born in Berlin on Aug. 21, 1992, to Bonnie Guerin and Ricky Hood, Guerin is survived by his parents, both of Berlin.
A funeral service will be held for Guerin on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Bryant Funeral Home, 180 Hillside Ave., Berlin. Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
