Pinkerton: 'No surprises' on first day with additional Hooksett students

DERRY — Pinkerton Academy administrators said the first day of school went well on Thursday, and that included the arrival of 99 freshmen from Hooksett.

Officials had been preparing for the opening, so there weren’t any surprises, said Chip Underhill, executive director of public affairs and external affairs at the school.

Administrators were prepared for the students who typically have some trouble finding their way around the sprawling campus at the state’s largest high school, he said.

“The first day of school always includes quite a few students looking at their maps and their pieces of paper, and they’ve got a look on their face like ‘Where do I go?”’ Underhill said. “And we have dozens of faculty who know that’s happening, so they stand around and they walk up and say, ‘Can I help you?’”

The arrival of all of the freshmen, including the Hooksett students, went as expected, said Underhill. He said there is no distinction made between a Hooksett freshman or a Derry freshman.

“That’s the nice thing about this campus; everyone assimilates very fast,” he said

The 99 Hooksett students chose to attend Pinkerton for the 2014-15 school year. In addition to Pinkerton, students were able to choose from other surrounding schools — Manchester, Bow, Londonderry and Pembroke Academy, according to officials.

On Thursday, an assembly was held for each class of students, Underhill said. Students learned about expectations for the year and any changes that might have occurred since the previous year.

Along with new Headmaster Griffin Morse, a number of other staffers began their first day of work at the high school, Underhill said.

They include Tina Tanguay and Peter Dannible, associate deans; Jennifer Warburton, head librarian; and Heather Hass, 504 Coordinator.
