Newport shooting victim in stable but critical condition

NEWPORT — Police remain mum on details of an investigation into a Thursday night shooting at a Laurel Street home.

Newport Police Chief Jim Burroughs said in an email Friday afternoon that the one male shooting victim is in stable, but critical condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. He said he is not releasing the victim’s name at this time.

“He is being treated for a single gunshot wound to his torso,” Burroughs said. “Investigating officers have identified all persons associated with the incident and the investigation is ongoing.”

Burroughs reiterated that there is no danger to the public.

Police responded to 146 Laurel St. at 8:15 p.m. Thursday after receiving a 911 call reporting someone had been shot. The victim was treated on scene by Newport Ambulance Service and subsequently flown by DHART to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Burroughs said Friday afternoon that 146 Laurel St. has been turned over to the property owners.

The shooting is being investigated by the Newport police with assistance from the State Police Major Crime Unit, the Sullivan County Attorney’s Office and the state Attorney General’s Office.
