Smoking ban in Claremont parks gains preliminary approval

CLAREMONT — A ban on smoking in city parks garnered preliminary approval from the city council Wednesday.

The proposed ordinance is set for another public hearing later this month, when it will be voted on again.

City councilors voted 8-1 to adopt the ban, which would ban smoking in city parks, but would allow for smoking in designated areas.

Councilor Kyle Messier voted against the proposal because she didn’t think the ban established a great enough distance around the designated smoking areas, said City Manager Guy Santagate.
The ban would create a five-foot or greater buffer between the designated smoking areas and entrances, exits or walkways of any building or other area open to the public.

In June, city council members passed over a proposed ordinance to ban smoking in public parks after residents had expressed their opposition.
The council members asked city staff to rewrite the draft allowing for areas of each city parks be set aside for smoking.
