Sherborne takes Manchester city golf crown

Two years ago, David Sherborne blew a two-shot lead, lost the Manchester City Golf Tournament by one stroke to Austin Fox and took some light-hearted ribbing from his fellow Derryfield Country Club members.

On Monday, Sherborne experienced the thrill of victory after his six-foot birdie on the second playoff hole at Intervale CC toppled Kyle Badger for the tournament title.

Sherborne, a native of New Zealand who moved his family to Manchester in 2008, was happy to get rid of his bridesmaid title.

“I guess I won’t be getting any more grief from my friends at the Derryfield,” said Sherborne. “I have to admit, losing that tournament stayed with me for a little while.”

Sherborne said he was leading by two shots entering the 17th hole at his home course in 2012.

“I ended up scoring a triple bogey on that hole, parred the 18th and lost by a shot,” he said. “That was tough to take at the time.”

Over the holiday weekend, Sherborne carded a 73-70-70-213 total, an even-par score overall. His worst round of the tournament happened to be at Derryfield, where he tallied a three-over 73.

“I was battling a little cold I must of gotten from my son and just didn’t feel right that day,” said Sherborne. “I bogeyed three of the last four holes at Derryfield. I left just telling myself to stay patient.”

Sherborne bounced back to shoot a one-under 70 Sunday at Manchester and a two-under 70 Monday at Intervale.

Badger (77-69-67-213), a member of Intervale, rallied back strong on his home course Monday, carding a 67.

“Kyle played really well, had a strong round that almost carried him to the title,” said Sherborne. “We were neck and neck down the stretch and fortunately I pulled even with him when he bogeyed the 16th hole. We both parred out the 17th and 18th holes and went two extra holes.”

On the first playoff hole, both golfers parred. On the second playoff hole, played on the par 5, fifth hole, Sherborne said he used a five-wood from 225 yards out to reach the green. He chipped from the fringe, got within six feet and made his birdie for the win. Sherborne said he plans to return next summer to defend his title.

“This was a tournament I wanted to win,” he said. “It’s fun, it’s competitive and I enjoy the format.”

On Sunday, Tara Watt, with a overall two-day 152 score, won the Manchester Women’s City Golf Tournament at Derryfield CC. Carole Labranche was second at 157 and senior champion Louise Billy was third overall at 159. Andrea Morrell was fourth at 164
