Fifth annual Wings of Hope Butterfly Release planned for Saturday in Lebanon

LEBANON — Hundreds of butterflies will be released in Colburn Park Saturday as part of the Visiting Nurse and Hospice for Vermont and New Hampshire’s fifth annual Wings of Hope Butterfly Release.

The event raises money to support hospice programs and services for patients and their families.

The butterfly release is planned to take place from 1 to 3 p.m.

“If you’ve lost a loved one to cancer or another terminal illness, you’re probably aware of the incredibly important role hospice workers have in terms of the invaluable care they provide,” event spokeswoman Roxanne Rubell said.

Along with the simultaneous release of butterflies, the event will also include music and food.

Purchase of a butterfly for release is $20. The proceeds help support VNH Hospice care programs, patients and their families.

VNH also hopes to provide a unique way to remember those who have passed on, through the butterfly release ceremony.

“Butterflies symbolize the cycle of life — birth, transition, healing and renewal,” said Jeanne McLaughlin, VNH president and CEO. “This is a moving, visually stunning ceremony that helps raise funds and awareness for our hospice programs and services.”

To purchase a butterfly, visit or call (888) 300-8853. The event also includes music from the Kurn Hattin Choir, inspirational poems and a reading of the names of loved ones remembered. The event is free and open to the public.
