Dems not amused by Brown's out-of-state voter joke

Scott Brown’s joke on a Boston radio show about out-of-state voters taking advantage of New Hampshire’s same-day voter registration to support him got plenty of static.

Brown, on Howie Carr’s show on WRKO-AM, was asked by a caller why someone should vote for him over another of the U.S. Senate Republican hopefuls, notably Jim Rubens and Bob Smith.

“Where’s it from? Vermont,” Brown replied after being told the call was from Vermont.

“Yeah, (860),” the host said, briefly mistaking Connecticut’s area code.

Brown, who could be heard chuckling, then said, “They can come over and do same-day registration. ... Say they want to come down and vote, so if they feel compelled to do so, come on down.”

Democrats were quick to criticize him for making light of voter fraud, something Republicans in particular have said is a problem in the state.“He was clearly joking,” said Elizabeth Guyton, spokeswoman for Brown.

New Hampshire Democratic Party spokeswoman Julie McClain said voter fraud is no joking matter.

“Brown must not believe he can win this election with just New Hampshire voters, because he is now telling radio listeners to travel to New Hampshire explicitly to vote for him — and that’s wrong,” McClain said.

New Hampshire GOP spokesman Lauren Zelt said Brown was “making a lighthearted joke.”

“Unfortunately, New Hampshire Democrats have viewed voter fraud as a serious Election Day strategy and even used Democratic state Sen. Martha Fuller Clark’s Portsmouth mansion as a safe harbor for out-of-state voters,” Zelt said in a written statement.

“New Hampshire Democrats have promoted real voter fraud, and it’s clear that they will employ the same strategy to prop up Jeanne Shaheen’s flailing campaign.”
