Pinkerton boys' soccer team captures opener

MERRIMACK — Merrimack scored first but Pinkerton scored the next four to win its season opener, 4-1, on Wednesday.

“It is a nice way to begin. You don’t know what you have until you get on the field,” said Astros coach Kerry Boles. ”We moved the ball, created a lot of opportunities. I’m very happy with the effort.”

Steve Sexton put the Tomahawks up 1-0 with a goal in the eighth minute.

“We lost our legs a little bit. Pinkerton definitely stepped it up after we got that first goal,” said Merrimack coach Ryan Farnsworth. “They got some great goals off or restarts and unfortunately we did not answer.”

Boles felt his team played well despite falling behind early. “We did a nice job in the first few minutes. Unfortunately they scored on their shot,” said Boles. “It would have been easy to get frustrated at that point, but we have a fairly talented team here.”

Alex Ebner got the Astros first two goals. The first came in the 35th minute when he knocked in a ball that looped over Merrimack goalie Austen Thomson. The other came in the 51st minute on long, bending shot off a goal kick that caught the corner.

“When they set up the wall defensively, their goalie was hugging one post and left the rest of the net open. Alex took advantage of that with a nice shot,” said Boles.

Trevor Morrison added another goal four minutes later to make it 3-1 Pinkerton. Then Kyle Hicks made it 4-1 in the 62nd minute.

“I explained to them that even if you’re down a goal, or even two, if there’s time on the clock we’ll be able push the ball forward and get some chances,” said Boles. “I like the fact they kept fighting and came back.”

For Merrimack, the Astros defense was too tough to penetrate. “They took control on the defensive end and we needed to play more to beat that. Unfortunately we didn’t,” said Farnsworth.

The Tomahawks fall to 0-2.
