Monarchs strike early in win
The Manchester Monarchs on Friday night recorded their third straight victory, 5-2 over the host Worcester Sharks.
Center Jordan Weal scored two goals and teammate David Van der Gulik tipped in a Colin Miller shot to give the Monarchs a 3-1 lead after the first period. Weal’s two scores were his fourth and fifth of the season. He now leads Manchester (8-4) in points with 12. Miller picked up an assist on Van der Gulik’s goal and Weal’s second tally.
Manchester has outscored its opponents 15-5 in the first period this season.
Sean Backman and Nick Shore scored two empty-net goals in the third period to cap the Monarchs’ scoring. Shore now leads the team in goals with six and has recorded five points in his last three games. Weal assisted on Backman’s goal to record his second three-point game of the season.
Providence College product Matt Taormina scored in the third period to cut the Monarchs down to a 3-2 lead. Worcester (8-4-1) elected to pull goaltender J.P. Anderson after Taormina’s goal at 17:47, which led to Backman and Shore’s empty-netters.
Matt Tennyson scored the Sharks’ first goal on a power play at 18:23 in the first period. Anderson made 30 saves for the Sharks. Jean-Francois Berube made 29 stops for Manchester. The Monarchs outshot Worcester, 35-31, en route to their fifth victory in their last six contests.
Manchester hosts Providence tonight at 7 p.m. before hitting the road to play Hartford on Sunday at 3 p.m.
