BRENTWOOD - George Dionne was surprised and a bit suspicious Wednesday morning when he got a call from his neighbor telling him that his truck was on fire.

The 1998 Dodge pickup had been parked in the neighbor's field on Deer Hill Road since the Thanksgiving power outage. He hasn't used the truck for two weeks and said he's had no trouble with the vehicle, which he bought new in 1998.

“I'm just curious why it happened,” he said.

Fire officials are a little puzzled, too.

The fire was reported shortly before 11:30 a.m., after it was spotted by the neighbor. The truck was parked at the end of a long dirt roadway leading to the field.

Fire Chief Kevin Lemoine said Jon True, the department's fire inspector, will investigate the fire's cause.

Lemoine said it appears the fire started in the engine compartment and spread to the back.Rockingham County Sheriff Deputy Christopher Stone and police Lt. David Roy were the first on the scene and heard an explosion when the fire reached the back of the truck.

“It happened just as I was stepping out of my vehicle. It was pretty loud. We're assuming it was the gas tank. With vehicle fires you tend to expect those things,” Roy said.Dionne said he got permission to park the truck on the neighbor's property to make it easier to plow his driveway, because it's out of the way. He uses the truck in the summer when he does landscaping work.Dionne said the last time he used the truck was during the Thanksgiving week storm. He said he used the truck to bring a generator to his tenant's place.

When he returned, he parked the truck at the end of a road in the field.“I don't know what happened,” he said.

Lemoine said there have been no other reports of vehicle fires in town.
