Third-period strike lifts Monarchs

The Manchester Monarchs downed the Worcester Sharks, 2-1, Saturday night in Worcester, Mass.

David Van der Gulik put the Monarchs on the board at 19:10 of the first period with a power play goal to tie the game at 1-1.

Teammate Andrew Bodnarchuk broke the stalemeate at 7:51 in the third period with a goal of his own on a breakaway that proved to be the game-winner. The goal was Bodnarchuk's first of the season.

Zach O'Brien assisted on Van der Gulik's fifth goal of the season, giving him four goals and three assists in the last five games.

Freddie Hamilton scored the Sharks' lone goal at 1:02 in the first period.

Manchester (17-5-1-1) outshot Worcester, 29-15. The Sharks were held scoreless on nine poewr play opportunities.

Jean-Francois Berube made 14 saves in net for the Monarchs. The Manchester goaltender has allowed two goals or less in each of his last four games. Troy Grosenick made 27 stops for the Sharks (10-12-2).

Manchester ends its three-game weekend today in Providence with a 3 p.m. game against the Bruins.
