PELHAM - A local man who allegedly passed out behind the wheel of his pick-up truck after hitting a van on Atwood Road on Tuesday night was arrested, charged with driving under the influence.
Police responded to a crash on Atwood Road by Old Lawrence Road about 7:30 p.m. after a caller reported that his van had been hit by a pick-up truck and that he believed the driver of the truck, identified later as Kevin Bolia, 24, of Pelham, was intoxicated, police said. The van driver told police the truck was driving at him head on and swerved completely into his lane. The van's driver tried to avoid the truck by driving off the road into a snow bank, but the truck still hit the rear of the van, according to police.Officer David DeRoche found a damaged 1999 Chevrolet pick-up in the rear entrance of Yarde Metals, off Atwood Road, and said he saw that the driver was passed out at the wheel while the truck was still in drive. When DeRoche woke up the driver, the driver allegedly lifted his foot off the brake pedal and began to roll away, police said. Bolia allegedly was unable to stop the truck, so DeRoche reached into the truck and shifted it into park to avoid further damage, police said.Bolia was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs after an investigation at the scene.
Bolia was released on bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Salem District Court on March 10 on charges of driving under the influence and driving under the influence (second offense). He also was cited for a marked lanes email@example.com
