Reports: Chip Kelly's Eagles to sign Tim Tebow, 27, to one-year contract

Tim Tebow is set to make a surprise return to the NFL after the quarterback agreed on a one-year deal with N.H. native Chip Kelly's Philadelphia Eagles, the league reported on Sunday.

Terms of the contract have yet to be revealed but the 27-year-old Tebow is expected to join a large group of quarterbacks vying for spots on the Philadelphia roster.

Tebow has been employed as a television analyst since his last NFL game in 2012 but worked out with the Eagles last month and appears to have made a good impression.

The quarterback polarized opinion during a career that was beset by problems with his passing consistency and appeared to have fallen out of favor when he was cut by the New England Patriots following pre-season training in 2013.

However, Eagles coach Chip Kelly has been busy in the off-season after Philadelphia missed out on the playoffs despite compiling a 10-6 record and Tebow is on line to become the latest name on a long list of signings to a revamped squad.

Since last appearing in a game for the New York Jets in 2012, Tebow worked as an analyst on the SEC Network, which is owned by ESPN.

During his lone year in New York, Tebow appeared in 12 games (two starts) as Mark Sanchez’s backup. He completed six of eight passes for 39 yards, and he rushed 32 times for 102 yards. Sanchez is now with the Eagles, along with quarterbacks Sam Bradford, Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne.

After a Heisman Trophy-winning college career that included two national championships at Florida, Tebow was selected 25th overall by the Denver Broncos in the 2010 draft. He led the Broncos to the playoffs — and a postseason win — in 2011, when he posted a 7-4 regular-season record as a starter.

In 35 NFL regular-season games overall, Tebow has a 47.9 percent completion rate (173-for-361) for 2,422 yards with 17 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. He has 989 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns on 197 carries (5.0-yard average). Tebow owns an 8-6 regular-season record as a starter.
