NH Colleges: Vermont upends UNH

The University of New Hampshire had four players in double figures but still came up short to Vermont, 73-67, Wednesday night in America East men’s basketball play in Burlington, Vt.

Both teams are 10-5 in league play. UNH falls to 17-11 overall while Vermont is 18-12.

Jaleen Smith led the Wildcats with 16 points. Ronnell Jordan and Jacoby Armstrong scored 15, while Taylor Leissner added 13.

Trae Bell-Haynes led Vermont with 16 points. Kurt Steidl scored 13 and Cam Ward added 11.

Vermont led throughout, shooting 43 percent from the field. The Wildcats shot 36 percent, only 22 percent on 3-point tries.

Women’s basketball

Northeast-10: St. Anselm is the Northeast Division’s second seed in the upcoming conference tournament, and will receive a first-round bye.

The Hawks will host the University of New Haven, the third seed in the Southwest Division, on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals

Franklin Pierce is the Northeast Division’s fourth seed, and will host Adelphi, the Southwest Division’s fifth seed, on Friday night at 7 in Rindge. The winner will visit American International on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

Men’s volleyball

Daniel Webster 3, Elmos 0: At Nashua, senior Ryan Howdeshell posted a match-high 10 kills and reigning NECC Rookie of the Week Saunoa Afoa added nine kills, five assists and seven digs guiding host Daniel Webster Wednesday night.
