DERRY -The Derry Economic Development Advisory Committee will host an open forum next Wednesday to discuss the organization and launch of the Derry Homegrown Farm & Artisan Market set to open this summer.
The Business Owners' Open Forum will focus on getting business involved in the market that the Derry Homegrown Farm & Artisan Market will launch this summer.
Terri Pastori, EDAC chairman, said that next week's meeting is about getting local businesses informed about the market and getting them wanting to participate.
“There are people who are really interested who want a market back in Derry,” said Pastori.
Working with local farmers and artisans, Pastori hopes to bring a market back to downtown Derry. The previous market was an important part of the community, Pastori said, and it was a town-sponsored marketplace that gave local businesses a venue to sell their products.
“We had a market a long time ago and it was vibrant,” said Pastori.
After the old market died out, Pastori and her team reached out to the previous organizer but plans to resurrect the market fell through.
“We decided to create an entirely new, fresh market,” said Pastori.
In the process of incorporating Derry Homegrown Farm & Artisan Market into its own company, Pastori and her team pledged to have quarterly meetings in the lead-up to this summer's market opening. Next Wednesday's meeting is part of that pledge.
Pastori wants to bring in entertainment alongside the traditional local food. She envisions face paintings and other family friendly activities to be available while shoppers enjoy the local products.
“We'll also have an entertainment portion of it, and we want to reach out and collaborate with local business,” said Pastori, adding, “We want it to be another draw to come to downtown Derry”
At the meeting, the board will also discuss cross marketing opportunities for local business and take feedback from the public.
Next Wednesday's meeting will be open to anyone who wants to get involved in the new marketplace. The meeting will be at the Cable Station at the Derry Municipal Center at 7 p.m.
