AARP NH offers free presentations on fraud

CONCORD — Identity theft, investment fraud and other scams rob Americans of their hard-earned money, and new schemes crop up weekly.

Last year,15.4 million Americans were victims of identity theft alone, according to a report released last month by Javelin Strategy & Research. The report put fraud losses in 2016 at $16 billion.

That’s why AARP New Hampshire has organized a volunteer corps of fraud fighters — in most regions of the state — dedicated to educating Granite Staters on the three Rs of fraud: recognize, resist and report.

Fraud fighters give free presentations on top frauds and scams to a variety of community groups. The session is appropriate for any age group and covers:

Fraud trends and behaviors:Understand how much fraud is out there and the behaviors that put you at risk.

The con artist’s play book: Understand the strategy and tactics used by con artists to defraud.

Prevention: Learn the most effective prevention strategies to avoid becoming a victim. Recognize the “red flags,” and report.

Resources: Learn how to access and share up-to-date information about fraud identification and prevention and where to go if you’ve been a victim.

To request a fraud presentation, or get involved as a volunteer fraud fighter, email nh@aarp.org.
