Combating hate crimes

To the Editor: I am writing to support President Trump’s denunciation of the recent upsurge of hate crimes in the U.S. in his address to Congress. This is critically important given the recent wave of hate crimes. The desecration of two Jewish cemeteries and murder of the Indian software engineer in Kansas are but three of the more than 1,000 incidents that have taken place during his first month in office (per data collected by the Southern Poverty Law Center). Locally, white supremacist graffiti has been found at schools in Concord and Manchester.
One concrete way for Mr. Trump to back up his words is to announce continuing support for the White House Interagency Initiative on Hate Crimes. He can also instruct Attorney General Sessions to investigate such incidents with the full force of his department.
If we are to come together as a country, all of us need to feel safe in our homes, schools, work, and places of worship. Addressing crimes based on hatred for a person’s group can help move us toward this goal.
