Monarchs win, eye opening playoff series clincher SaturdayStaff report

Goalie Sam Brittain made 29 saves as the Manchester Monarchs beat the Adirondack Thunder 2-1 on Thursday night in Glens Falls, N.Y., earning a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven ECHL first-round playoff series.
The Monarchs can clinch the series with a win on Saturday night back at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Zac Lynch, who starred collegiately at Robert Morris University in his hometown of Pittsburgh, scored the winning goal, unassisted, at 4:52 of the third period. The forward collected a loose puck on an Adirondack turnover at the left circle and fired a wrist shot past goalie J.P. Anderson.
The Thunder pulled Anderson with 1:08 remaining, but couldn’t get the equalizer.
Ashton Rome’s second goal of the series gave a Monarchs a 1-0 at 4:28 of the first period, on the power play. Rome tipped home Thomas Schemitsch’s shot from the blue line.
The Thunder’s Cullen Bradshaw knotted things at 15:46 of the first period.
Adirondack was 0-for-6 on the power play, Manchester 1-for-5.
