Dover man charged with lying to police about having been robbed

DOVER - A local man has been charged with lying to police about being robbed last month.

John Freeman, 39, of 149 Portland Ave., faces a single count of False Report to Law Enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor.

Police allege Freeman contacted Dover Police Department on May 21 to report he’d been robbed the night before while walking downtown.

Freeman claimed “he was approached from behind by an unknown man who claimed to be armed and demanded cash,” police allege.

Detectives investigated and concluded Freeman wasn’t robbed and an arrest warrant was issued.

Freeman turned himself in to Dover police on Monday, was booked and released on $1,000 personal recognizance bond pending arraignment in Seventh Circuit Court – District Division - Dover on Aug. 28.
