Portland stymies Fisher Cats

Portland pitching held the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to four hits in a 2-1 loss Saturday night in the first game of a doubleheader at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
The Sea Dogs' Elih Villanueva got the win with six innings of two-hit scoreless ball, walking three and striking out four. The Fisher Cats scratched out a run in the ninth off Williams Jerez, but he earned his fourth save.
Portland got two runs in the fourth as Danny Mars led off with a double. Josh Tobias sacrificed but a throwing error by New Hampshire's Tim Lopes put runners on first and third. Both later scored on Jeremy Barfield's one-out single.
The Fisher Cats' Francisco Rios pitched well but took the loss (3-9). He allowed both runs, only one earned, on six hits. He walked one and struck out five.
New Hampshire put together a rally in the seventh, Recent callup Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled with one out and went to third on Lopes' single. Gurriel scored on a Gunnar Heidt ground out. With Lopes on second as the tying run, Jerez whiffed Matt Dean to end it.
The Fisher Cats earned a doubleheader split with a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Matt Dean's RBI double in the fourth made the difference.
