NASHUA — New Hampshire Union Leader Publisher Joseph McQuaid was the guest speaker at the August meeting of the Nashua Lions Club.

McQuaid told the Lions how it came to be that he wrote his new book, “Cog Days, A Boy’s Life and One Tragic Summer on Mt. Washington,” about the Cog Railway and his experiences while working summers on the train.

The club presented McQuaid with the Multiple District pin for 2017-2018, which depicts one of the Cog’s original engines.

The Nashua Lions meet on the first and third Mondays of each month at the Crowne Plaza hotel and will celebrate their 94th anniversary next month.

Hooksett Garden Club visits Moulton Farm

HOOKSETT — The Hooksett Garden Club’s next meeting of the club will be Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. at the Hooksett Public Library, 31 Mount St. Mary’s Way.

Meetings are free and open to the public. New members are always welcome.

In lieu of a regular business meeting in July, club members visited Moulton Farm in Meredith for a luncheon prepared by the farm’s chef of vegetables and herbs from the farm; they were then given a lecture on herbs. Following the visit, members went to the home of member Mary Farwell for dessert and drinks.

The clubs’ largest beautification project — 50 flower boxes filled with five colors of petunias on the Memorial Bridge in Hooksett — continues to look beautiful. This year a self-fertilizing system was added.

The HGC is a member of the New Hampshire Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. and National Garden Clubs, Inc. For more information, please view the HGC website at www.hooksettnhgardenclub.org., email www.hooksettnhgardenclub@gmail.com, or follow us at Facebook.com/Hooksett Garden Club.

Bedford Garden Club: Award-winning design

BEDFORD — Jeanne Popielarz, past president and current treasurer of the Bedford Garden Club, received the People’s Choice award at the 14th Annual Petals 2 Paint competition sponsored by East Colony Fine Arts at LaBelle Winery in Amherst.

More than 20 floral designers participated in the event by choosing an artwork from East Colony Artists’ collections and creating an interpretation of that artwork by using a variety of fresh flowers and other organic materials.

Popielarz created a floral arrangement that reflected the theme of artist Aline Lotter’s artwork titled “Creeping Shadows.”
