DURHAM - The University of New Hampshire's football game Saturday against Georgia Southern has been moved to Birmingham, Ala., because of Hurricane Irma.
Tom Kleinlein, Georgia Southern director of athletics, said relocating the game was the only option this weekend as Irma continues making its way across the Caribbean and tracking toward Florida and the southeast Atlantic Coast.
“With the potential impact on the region and our campus, it was paramount to make a decision today so that we would not have to pull resources that may be used in an evacuation scenario,” Kleinlein said in a release Wednesday night.
Georgia Southern's campus is about 70 miles inland and the school has canceled classes from Friday until Tuesday,.
Kleinlein thanked University of Alabama-Birmingham Athletic Director Mark Ingram for reaching out and offering use of its facilities, including Legion Field.
Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Eastern. Admission will be free, Kleinlein said.
