To the Editor: Before climate change was a part of our vocabulary, my daughter, then 10 years old, wrote to President Nixon with her concern about pollution. We had just moved to Houston from the Berkshires. He wrote back to her:
"May 26, 1970
It was heartening to learn of your strong interest in stopping the pollution of our natural environment. All American citizens, young and old, must work together if we are to succeed in making our country the clean and healthful place all of us want it to be.
You can help in this effort, first by learning all you can about the causes and effects of pollution and the ways of remedying it, and then by setting an example for others to follow.
