SALEM — A Massachusetts man who was stopped for reckless operation on South Broadway faces multiple new drug charges after police said a search of his car uncovered a large amount of heroin.
Jason Belmer, 38, of 29 Marina Drive, Haverhill, Mass., appeared impaired when he was stopped Aug. 31, police said. “There was a small amount of drugs, so he was arrested for DWI, transporting drugs, possession of drugs and resisting arrest,” said Capt. Joel P. Dolan.
Belmer was released on $5,000 cash bail in that incident.
When he appeared in court for arraignment Monday, he was arrested on felony drug charges.
Officers seized his vehicle after they said they saw evidence of drugs and that he had tried to flee.
Police searched the car and said they found bags of white powder; a kilogram-sized, tightly wrapped package of white powder believed to be heroin and fentanyl; items used in the packaging of narcotics; and $71,000 in cash. As Belmer arrived at the Salem district court for his arraignment to answer the original charges, police say he was taken into custody without incident and had his bail raised to $25,000 cash.
