Zach Sanford of Manchester

The St. Louis Blues announced Tuesday that forward Zach Sanford, a former player with Pinkerton Academy of Derry and Boston College, is expected to be sidelined five to six months after undergoing surgery for a dislocated left shoulder.

Sanford, of Manchester, suffered his injury Friday on the first day of training camp at the Ice Zone in Hazelwood, Mo. He crashed into the boards after being checked by forward Dimitrij Jaskin. Sanford and Jaskin entered camp battling for the final roster spot.

Sanford, 22, collected two goals and three assists in 13 games after being acquired in a Feb. 27 trade with the Washington Capitals for defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk.

Sanford was chosen in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in the second round, 61st overall by the Capitals.

He played in 26 games with the Capitals during the 2016-17 season, scoring two goals with one assist before being traded to St. Louis.

In two seasons (79 games) with Boston College, he registered 20 goals and 43 assists.

The Blues also lost defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, who will be re-evaluated in three weeks after sustaining a fractured left ankle. Bouwmeester had one goal and 14 assists in 81 games last year. The 33-year-old averaged 22:24 of ice time per contest.
