KEENE — Organizers of the 40th annual Clarence DeMar Marathon and its 4th annual DeMar half-marathon met with city officials Wednesday to talk about concerns over Sunday’s predicted warm weather.

“On Wednesday, race officials are meeting with the City of Keene Emergency Management Services and Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth Hitchcock Keene to assess the most current weather forecasts and discuss any actions for Sunday,” organizers said Tuesday in an email to all registered runners for Sunday’s marathon and half marathon.

The warm weather predicted includes temperatures up to 89 degrees Sunday with conditions being sunny, warm and muggy. The marathon begins in Gilsum at 8 a.m. and ends 26.2 miles later at Keene State College.

Organizers and health professionals on hand the day of the marathon are typically dealing with crisp fall weather.

Any changes in the marathon, including start time, will not be announced until late Thursday.

“We will update all registered runners by email by the end of the day on Thursday with an update. We are monitoring things very closely and will make decisions based on the safety of our runners, volunteers and community at large,” the email said.

The DeMar is a Boston Marathon qualifier for marathon runners.

The DeMar marathon is named for former Keene State College professor and seven-time winner of the Boston Marathon, Clarence DeMar, who was an advocate of active and healthy children.

Children and seniors are also encouraged to participate in the marathon on a smaller scale. In recent years, the DeMar has included a Kids’ DeMar and a Super Seniors DeMar Marathon, which encourages children and seniors to log 25 miles of walking or running over the summer and then complete the last 1.2 miles of the 26.2-mile course the day of the DeMar Marathon.

The DeMar Kids’ Marathon was started in 2011 to promote the health and well-being of children in the region by the Healthy Monadnock 2020 Organizational Champions.

The Champions include the Keene Elm City Rotary Club, the Advocates for Healthy Youth Coalition, Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene and the Cheshire Health Foundation, MoCo Arts, the Keene Family YMCA, the city of Keene Parks and Recreation Department, Beeze Tees, area elementary schools, and many other individuals and volunteers.
