BEDFORD — Bedford Medical Center has opened its newly renovated space on South River Road, which consists of a group of independent medical practices.

“We are so happy to join together with our medical partners to extend our model of care to the greater Bedford and Manchester community,” said Ted Brooks, Derry Medical senior partner.

Derry Medical Center opened its fourth primary care office — the first one housed on the west side of the Merrimack River — earlier this year in temporary space within the lower level of the building at 160 South River Road.

Last month, the renovations to the second floor were completed and the relocation to the redesigned medical suite for six different practices became official. The facility’s title — Bedford Medical Center — became official as well.

In addition to Derry Medical Center, the medical practices housed in the complex include Derry Imaging Center at Bedford, Southern New Hampshire Internal Medicine Associates, Quest Diagnostics, Granite State Gastrointestinal Consultants and Granite State Podiatry.

“The real pleasure of the facility for all of the different practices was being able to have this one area where a patient can see their primary care, get an X-ray at the imaging center, get a mammogram or get their lab work done,” said Susan Chadwick, director of marketing and public relations at Derry Medical Center. “It is a very unencumbered process.”

The building has been transformed from a dated, nearly empty building into a modern facility providing vital medical services for people in the area, according to Chadwick.

“The real game changer, I believe, is that Derry Medical and all the practices are independent. They are neither hospital-owned, nor hospital-affiliated,” said Chadwick. “It is a different model of care that our patients appreciate. They can go to any hospital that they need to. They are not restricted in any way.”

Derry Medical Center has four doctors and two mid-level physician assistants or nurse practitioners stationed at the new facility, and there is room for growth, Chadwick said. There are numerous exam rooms and staff members between the six practices, she added.

Ed Schiavoni of Southern New Hampshire Internal Medicine Associates said that partnering with Derry Medical, Derry Imaging and other medical practices has been a great model in other Internal Medicine locations, enabling the group to continue to provide high quality, patient-centered care for its patients.

Having a new Quest Diagnostics lab in Bedford is a huge benefit and convenience for residents in town and surrounding communities, said Chadwick. She explained that it helps promote the one-stop medical shopping model.

Bedford Medical Center has extended hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays.
