Power Poll: Salem, Winnacunnet remain tied for No. 1

Nothing on the field last weekend prompted voters in the New Hampshire Union Leader High School Football Power Poll to change their minds about the top five teams.

Not only are the top five ranked the same, the number of points allotted to each of those clubs remained the same.

After Week 7, it’s still 7-0 Winnacunnet of Hampton and 7-0 Salem tied for the top, with three first-place votes apiece. The Blue Devils’ closest margin of victory was 15 (35-20, over Pinkerton). The Warriors have amassed some tight victories, but are sitting at the top based on the quality of those wins; three of their victories came against clubs ranked in the Power Poll this week.

Winnacunnet and Salem are followed by Plymouth, Goffstown and Pinkerton of Derry.

Division III’s Campbell of Litchfield cracked the poll for the first time this season after making a mockery of its showdown with fellow unbeaten Somersworth. The Cougars (6-0) pulled away for a 47-14 road win.

The lone game this weekend involving a pair of ranked teams takes place Friday night at Stellos Stadium, where the No. 9 Nashua South Purple Panthers (5-2), winners of five straight, host No. 8 Londonderry (6-1).

The Lancers have clinched a Division I playoff berth, but the Panthers have not.

Other games in Division I this weekend include Winnacunnet at Manchester Central and Nashua North at Salem on Friday night, and Dover at Bedford on Saturday.
