Penguins call up Rochester's DeSmith

October 24. 2017 12:08AM

The Pittsburgh Penguins placed backup goaltender Antti Niemi on waivers Monday and called up former UNH goalie Casey DeSmith.

Pittsburgh recalled DeSmith, a Rochester native, from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. He appeared in 97 games at UNH from 2011 to 2014.

DeSmith, 26, who has never appeared in an NHL game, won all three starts with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, posting a goals-against average of 0.98 and .965 save percentage while recording one shutout.

Niemi, 34, lost all three starts and sported a 7.49 goals-against average this season, his first with the Penguins and 10th in the NHL. He was cut loose two days after another ugly performance in a 7-1 loss at Tampa Bay.
