LACONIA — Melcher & Prescott Insurance changed ownership Nov. 1.

Chris Volpe, president of the company, which has been a fixture in the Lakes Region since 1959, announced the sale to Michael Sherman of Gilford in an email late Tuesday afternoon to customers and on the business’ Facebook page.

“In Mike, we feel that the combined effort of two generations of our family will be advanced in the interest of our clients, employees, and insurance carriers; guided by the moral, ethical and business principles which have been fundamental to our corporate culture,” Volpe wrote.

Sherman, who began his career as a surety bond underwriter, later bought the company for which he worked, building the regional agency group, the Dawson Companies. He has assumed the role of president but both Chris and Tom Volpe will remain as consultants.

Sherman and his wife, Audrey have strong ties to the Lakes Region. Her family has been in Moultonborough for three generations.
