AG: Scammed NH residents who paid by Western Union can get rebate

CONCORD — New Hampshire residents who believe they were deceived into sending scam payments using Western Union’s wire transfer service can apply for compensation from a $586 million fund.

The fund, administered by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Victim Asset Recovery Program, is related to a multi-state settlement made between the attorneys general of New Hampshire, 48 other states and the District of Columbia and Western Union that first was announced in January, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office.

Granite State residents may be eligible to receive compensation if they were a victim of a fraud-induced transfer using Western Union between Jan. 1, 2004 and Jan. 19, 2017.

New Hampshire residents who reported to Western Union or to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office that they had been the victim of a scam using Western Union will receive a claim form in the mail to be sent in the next two weeks. The form will contain instructions explaining how consumers can file a claim to receive compensation.

People who do not receive a claim form in the mail but believe they might have an eligible claim can visit http://www.westernunionremission.com or call 1-844-319-2124 for more information.

All completed claim forms must be mailed back to the settlement administrator by Feb. 12. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office encourages everyone affected to reach out to the Consumer Protection Bureau through the Consumer Information Line if they have questions or concerns at 1-888-468-4454 or file a complaint with the Bureau at: https://www.doj.nh.gov/consumer/complaints/index.htm.
